MLW WAP-5 & WAP-5 AMUL
The WAP-5 is a high-speed electric locomotive used by Indian Railways, introduced in the late 1990s. Built by Bombardier and Indian Railways’ Chittaranjan Locomotive Works, it is designed to haul premium trains like Rajdhani Express, Shatabdi Express, and Duronto Express. The locomotive operates on 25 kV AC electrified tracks and has a maximum speed of 200 km/h (124 mph), though typical speeds are around 130–150 km/h. It is powered by 5,000 horsepower and uses a 6-axle configuration (Bo-Bo-Bo). The WAP-5 features microprocessor control and regenerative braking, enhancing efficiency and safety. It is known for its smooth acceleration and braking, making it ideal for long-distance, high-speed services. With a weight of around 110 tons and a length of 20.5 meters, the WAP-5 remains a reliable workhorse in Indian Railways' fleet. Despite newer models, it continues to be integral for fast passenger trains.
